Spicing up your dog's diet – 6 easy tips

1. Mix it up with protein sources

Let's jazz up your dog's meals with some variety! Switching up the protein sources is refreshing for the dog’s digestive system. Rotate between various meats and fish, since diverse protein sources provide different nutrients for the dog’s gut microbes.

So, if your dog is usually chowing down on kibble with chicken as the main protein source, try switching to dry food that includes venison, salmon, or lamb from time to time. If your dog has allergies or food sensitivities, try to shuffle protein sources when you can. Alternatively, you can stick to the dog’s usual food and add some extra ingredients to spruce things up.

2. Mix and match dog food types

Want an easy way to shake things up? Mix some wet dog food into the dry kibble. One decilitre of dry food equals about two decilitres of wet food. Or, make your dog a breakfast special with wet food and save the kibble for dinner.

3. Kibble as snacks, wet food as main meal

Give your furry friend a little treat every now and then! You can make wet food or sausages for dogs their main course and use dry kibble as yummy treats. All PrimaDog wet foods and sausages for dogs are complete dog food, making them perfect for everyday dining. And for an occasional indulgence, you cannot go wrong with PrimaDog Active Duck & Herring, a grain-free, high-energy dry food that is super tasty.

4. Meat as a bonus

If your dog is all about kibble or wet food, you can amp up their diet with some ground meat or other raw dog food. Remember, though, meat is like a sidekick – by itself it does not provide all the nutrients your dog needs. So, feel free to swap out around 30% of your dog's daily food with meat or fish. No need for extra vitamins or minerals if about 70% of the dog’s daily diet is complete dog food.

5. Cook the meat or fish

For dogs with sensitive stomachs, serving up cooked meat is a smoother ride than raw. You can also treat them to some cooked white fish, like cod, to add some pizzazz to their meals. Go for boneless meats when you are cooking, so the tough bone bits do not mess with your dog's digestion. If you want more info on feeding a dog with a sensitive stomach, check out our guide.

6. A nutrient boost from eggs

Eggs are like little nutrition bombs for your dog, whether served up raw or cooked. Cooking them can give your dog's body an easier time soaking up all the nutrients. So, next time you are whipping up eggs, remember to share some with your furry friend.

Take it easy when changing your dog’s diet

The dog’s stomach needs time to adjust to new foods and ingredients, and swapping food too often can throw the dog’s gut bacteria out of whack, leaving it with a dodgy tummy.

Just remember, every dog is different. Some are unfazed by a new menu, while others might need a bit more time to get used to it. Switching up your dog's food can be a breeze if the dog has been munching on different protein sources and all sorts of food since it was a puppy.
